It's time to start working with your soil, and though the temperatures outside may not be the most pleasant to work in your garden, warm weather is just what you need to promote a rich healthy compost-soil that will provide your plants with the boost this fall season.
Wherever you are deciding to plants your newly purchased trees or bushes, loosen the ground with a shovel, or whatever helps you to dig through your hard ground. You will need to add sheet mulching along with cardboard, or several layers of newspaper, and layer each with leaves and grass clippings. The layering effect is kind of like making 7 layered bean dip, without all the mixing of too many items. Also, you won't need to many layers...3-4 should be okay layering cardboard or newspapers, topped with your leaves, or grass clippings.
Make sure to keep this area moist, not over saturated with water. After our beautiful winter, you should have a beautiful composted area for your new trees, plants, or shrubs, filled with the nutrients they will need to give them a great beginning. Springtime is here and your soil/compost mixture is ready for planting.
